Well.I decided to splurge and go for the "image" of leather and have now not only gotten that but the quality of this Mcklein bag.This bag is awesome.

Well made.Excellent stitching, quality zippers, great (and silent) wheels and from what I can tell a solid handle.

All around I'm very happy with this bag and I gotta tell you the compliments from clients on its looks don't hurt my attitude toward it.

Buy one and improve your image and quality of life!

The only reason I gave a 4 is because there is no off button to not be using the batteries. You have to remove the USB from the computer and snap it onto the mouse to actually turn it off. Other than that it works great. We are using it for a desktop computer.

(More customer reviews)I have had this cordless set for several days now. Here are my thoughts:

First the bad news. There could be better quality control on this. The first unit I purchased had a right-arrow key that would not work properly (all other keys worked fine). Another reviewer of this model here said that the space bar did not work properly on their unit. I liked everything else so much, I returned mine and got another unit, which is now working properly. The only other negatives I can mention are: (a) the temperature on the numeric keypad ALWAYS reads 77 degrees; (b) the Media key on the numeric keypad always seems to launch the default media player, no matter what I set it to (the media key on the full keyboard works fine).

Now the good news. I love the sleek look and modular design of this set, and it happens to match my HP Pavillion Notebook perfectly. I love the small USB receiver. I love the profile and tactile feel of the flat keyboard. I love the features that let you use this both on a desktop (in my case a docking station) or on the road with your laptop. The mouse is the least sexy of the three main parts, but nevertheless works well and the off switch is a nice feature; its main appeal is that it can be used on the desktop and as a portable laptop mouse. The wireless USB reciever, while small (a good thing), still has a very sufficient range.

All in all, this set has solved a number of problems for me and I strongly recommend it. Just be sure to check ALL the keys, etc. immediately when you get it and exchange it for another unit if any of the keys do not respond.

(More customer reviews)The Pico PK100 is a very small battery powered portable projector that produces a surprisingly good image in a darkened room. This model only supports composite video input. I was given this projector as a gift so I would likely have chosen the Optoma PK102 Pico Pocket Projector for the additional PC VGA support if picking one out for myself (I bought Sabrent PC Laptop Mac Computer to TV Presentation Converter, VGA to Video, PC to TV Converter Box, VGA-Video Converter TV-PC85 to provide the composite video, works great). That being said, the PK100 is still a remarkable device that is both fun and useful.

The box contains the Projector, rechargeable battery, USB cable (for charging only), charger, tripod adapter, and composite video\audio cable (Yellow, Red\white). We tried several video sources, including a digital camera, portable DVD player, and an iPod Nano (with the video output cable). These all worked well and produced perfectly acceptable image quality.

The unit has two brightness levels, but I always use the brightest one as it makes the truest colors. The darker the room the better, but the image is very visible at 6' in normal home ambient lighting. At 6' the image projected is roughly 2'x3' at 12' the size is 4'x6' but too washed out in anything but near total darkness.

Having a projector that works so well and that can be slipped into a pocket is very cool.

Some of you are probably asking the same questions...Palm or Windows? Keyboard or handwriting recognition?Built-in keyboard or stowaway? E-mail or no e-mail? Compaq Ipaq or HP Jornada 720?
I cannot answer all the questions for you, but as a non-techie person, here's how I made my decision.Let's start with the easiest question: Keyboard or handwriting?
I think most people are faster typists than they are writing long hand.This is why we went from drawing on cave walls, to writing on paper, to typing with a manual typewriter, to typing with computers, and to voice recognition.Do you see a pattern here?It's called evolution.I see handwriting recognition as going backwards.People assume that handwriting recognition works as smoothly as touted.It doesn't and it is terribly frustrating.Sooner or later, you'll need a keyboard, which is why most people with palm or pocket PCs still buy keyboards. Think about it.If you need to write more than one paragraph, say a 3-page article, letter, or report, would you rather handwrite or type?Ask the many writers who use the J720 if they'd rather handwrite their stories and they'll think you've gone nuts.
Okay, so you're one of those people who like handwriting too much to give up on it.Enter the J720's Inkwriter.It's like a pad of paper that you can scribble anything on and then save it.Even longhand.Draw things on it (your house plan?), or play tic-tac-toe on it, or scribble the hastily dictated phone number of the cute guy you just met.Or pretend to make handwritten notes to keep awake during boring office meetings.
Next question.Built-in or stowaway keyboard?If you follow the reasoning for wanting keyboard over handwriting, you'll realize the only way to avoid the frustration of handwriting is to have a keyboard 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week.And if you need it that much, then it makes sense for it to be built-in.Of course, you could buy a Compaq Ipaq and carry the keyboard separately.But why punish yourself?
Palm or Windows?Personally, I hate learning new ways of doing things unless they improve on how I already do it.I'm familiar with the Windows platform.I use it in the office, I use it at home, and I use it on my PDA.I'm going for consistency.This OS rivalry reminds me of the Mac vs. PC and the Betamax vs.VCR (I'm dating myself).If you travel abroad frequently, you will soon discover that the rest of the world has learned to go with a safe bet.They will not waste limited dollars on something that might be obsolete in a matter of years.You can call it cattle mentality, but they see it as safety in numbers (i.e., the millions of Windows users worldwide).
Why not a laptop?Well, I already have a lightweight laptop at home which I plan to keep.But there is no laptop in the market today that is lighter than a PDA.I can go anywhere with my J720 and do practically everything that I need my laptop for.The J720's instant on/off feature alone is enough to convince me to leave the laptop at home.Cheaper than a laptop, better battery life, no need to boot up, blazingly fast, extremely lightweight and portable, and easy to pack (not a space hog). I've had the J720 for almost two months and has brought it on trips already (bravely left the laptop at home). The only thing I missed was the backache I would have gotten from lugging the laptop.Actually, make that two.I missed the paranoid feeling that someone might steal my laptop when it's out of my sight because I can't stash it in a pocket, purse, or hotel safe.In sum, I don't need a second laptop and the one I have will stay home from now on.
Pricewise, there's not much difference between a Compaq Ipaq and J720 after you factor in the added costs (for Ipaq) of a separate keyboard and something else (modem?) that the guy in the store told me but which I forgot. He said the J720 is about $100 more expensive than the Ipaq.And there are discounts if you want to spend the time finding them.However, the J720 is not for you if all you need is a gadget to store addresses and phone numbers.It'd be the equivalent of buying an expensive sportscar only to drive it at a top speed of 35 mph for a daily 5-mile commute.What a waste.Get those cheap and common calculator-like gadgets for $150.But if you want a PDA/organizer that can be a mini-laptop, this is it.
Sizewise, the J720 is slightly bigger than the Ipaq but still small enough to fit into a small purse. In fact, I was surprised at how small it was when I finally got it.I eyeballed the size based on the specifications given.It turned out to be smaller, which was what I wanted.If you buy a pocket PC or palm organizer and then carry the separate keyboard, the whole package will be bigger and bulkier than the J720.
The J720's screen is almost twice wider than the Ipaq's or other pocketpcs.This eliminates the annoyance of having to scroll left-right-top-bottom when looking at documents.Not a noticeable difference if all you do is look up addresses or phone numbers.But when you're working on a Word or Excel document (PocketWord/Pocket Excel), reading e-mail, or browsing the web, you will be glad your J720 has a wider screen.And because the J720 has a clamshell design (the screen closes/folds over the keyboard), you don't have to spend the extra $$ for a leather case to protect the screen.
By now - if you're still reading - you're probably wondering if there's anything I dislike at all about this gadget.Yes.It bugs me that the J720 doesn't have a latch to snap it close.Don't get me wrong... it does close, but I miss the comforting "click" sound of a latch.I almost returned the darn thing.But I was assured that the hinge has a wheel mechanism designed to withstand repeated opening and closing of the lid.
Also, the keyboard seemed tiny at first, but after a week of typing on it, it felt very comfortable for touch-typing documents, spreadsheets, etc.But if you're planning to write your first great American novel, you'll be pushing the limits of the keyboard (and your fingers).Do yourself a favor and write your magnum opus on a desktop or full-size laptop.If you want to work just a chapter at a time, the J720 will do. Still leaps and bounds over handwriting.
Lastly, it bugs me that the J720 comes only in one boring, unimaginative, dark blue grayish corporate color.I would have gladly chosen a more pretty-looking gadget (there's plenty out there), but the J720 beats them where it matters the most to me -- substance.The J720 is still a bargain for what it delivers.But would it be asking too much to want it in red?
There's my 2 cents' worth.By the way, I'm typing this on my J720's built-in keyboard.Would I handwrite this?No way!Would you?

I just needed/wanted decent sound for a new computer I bought that did not come with speakers (I wasn't interested in buying the optional computer speakers because I wanted decent sound since I planned on using my 22" monitor to watch movies across the room). SO, I read A Lot of reviews on Many different speakers and chose the Altec Lansing SoundBar Speakers. They never received Rave reviews nor did many have horrible things to report. That was interesting (often items get "polar reviews"). I braved the $40 bargain and hoped I hadn't wasted what I thought was half of what I should pay for a decent computer speaker. I AM VERY happy with my new speakers let me tell you why:

PROS:
1- Volume is loud enough to hear movies 10-12' across room
2- Sound is rich enough to listen to music files 10-12' away!
3- Handy volume dial AND mute function at fingertips!
4- Optional headphone jack on side of unit!
5- You probably won't wake the neighbor with this speaker!

CONS:
1 - A power cord and speaker cable exit the back (it cannot run on batteries). This is not a "portable" speaker if that is what you need.
2- It sits a little too high for my new monitor. I don't know why it was designed to sit 1" off the desk (it would be perfect height for me if it didn't, so I put my computer on a platform and put the mouse there when not in use).
3- A little "bulky" looking - do not buy it for its looks!
4- You probably won't wake the neighbor.

After a week of testing, I can honestly report that this speaker has surprised me! The Altec Lansing SoundBar Speaker has impressed me with it's rich sound, volume capability, convenience features and saved me from paying what I thought I Had to for decent sound!!!

(More customer reviews)I debated between the small and the medium bag because the medium bag was enormous on my small frame (5'2"). After many trips to the city, I found the small bag to hold up nicely. However, now that I am going on an international trip, I feel like I should have gotten the medium sized bag. Also, with a larger lens (Nikon D60 with 18-200mm lens), I found that I had to reconfigure the inside compartments so the camera lays from left to right rather than top to bottom. This forces me to configure the rest of the compartments oddly so I lost one of the four additional squares I had.
The construction of the bag is very high quality and the added rain bag is a plus. It's made of a soft canvas with heavy duty straps for carrying larger items outside of the pack. Unless you have a netbook, don't count on a real computer fitting in the back. I couldn't even get my work laptop (15") to fit.
Overall, I love the bag. I just wish it was a bit bigger but not as bulky as the medium one.

The built in speakers are a little quiet, but better than my notebook's built in speakers.

When connecting with a Mac, I recommend turning the monitor's auto sleep function off, as it would sleep before I could get my Mac to output video.

(More customer reviews)Some people don't know the details about power supplies like this. This one requires a long answer.

The PowerSource will provide about 45 Watt Hours. It has a limit of 60 watts from the battery and 80 watts from the 12 volt input. It has a 100 Watt surge limit for a short time.

Translation: the run time depends on your computer and the existing charge level when you plug it in to the PowerSource.

If your laptop batteries are run down, the PowerSource probably will NOT operate it.
If you remove the batteries it may work. It may also work to charge with the laptop off.
If you run it with the 12 volt input it may operate your laptop.

The reason for this is; your laptop uses twice as much power to run if it charges the batteries at the same time.

It will work, if you plug the laptop into the PowerSource before you run down the batteries.

I tested my HP dual core laptop watching movies over the WIFI link. It ran 1 hour and 35 minutes on the PowerSource then 2 and a half hour on its own batteries. Same test, next day, same results.

This would be 4 hours on an airline flight. It will power a Zune or IPod for a long time.
The more powerful the laptop, the shorter the battery life. Your mileage may vary.

It includes a special plug that work on some airlines power jacks.

Many smart phones use a specially wired charger to charge from the wall and will only charge from a computer IF the computer has a data connection to the smart phone. A different USB cable will not help, unless it is wired special. A cheat that works on some Smart Phones is to plug it in then reboot the smart phone.

I recommend it.

Unlike hp, sony, dell, which pre-install many garbage software on you laptop. Lenovo just install the thinkpad software, and some really nice software for tablet.
After 2 months usage, the computer runs smoothly.I love it.

There are many applications for this product, but before I go into my uses and thoughts I should point out that this device does take a certain knowledge concepts like JPEG, MPEG, MP3 and file conversion.You don't have to be a tech genius to work this device at all, but it helps to have a basic understanding.

Overall, this product delivers on the concept of having a reliable, portable, multi-format projector in an extremely compact size.It's about the size of your average digital camera or a little bigger than an Ipod but for what it is capable of, I find it to be extremely small.You can truly fit the device in your pocket.

It uses multiple methods of attaining images to project. You can use an SD card (which I found easiest) or you can load files onto the device.You can also use AV cables with the included adapter.Some AV devices do have a direct connection cable that would work but I'm not sure what the size or standard for that would be.For example. I was able to connect my Wii directly to the device with the AV cables and Video and sound were both functioning.

Depending on how close you are to the projection destination (I use a white wall) your image can actually be quite bright. Is it the crispest image ever?No . But it is pretty remarkable for the size.Color saturation is also decent. I didn't notice any lag when playing video files on the device.

Battery life was pretty good, I get about an hour depending on what I am doing but you can also keep the device plugged in.

I was able to do a complete power point presentation with the device by converting the files to JPEG (right in PPT). My audience was very impressed that I had the whole presentation, including projection in my pocket.

I was able to project the image from the device all the way across my room.Im complete darkness it worked fine but you may want to be closer to your receiving source (e.g. the wall) if you aren't able to have complete darkness.

Overall, if you are looking for a cool gadget that does what it says, then I would recommend this product. Keep in mind that this is a balance between projection, price and portability.If you find yourself matching one of my criteria then you will certainly enjoy this product.

I have been using it to transport my 17" laptop back and forth to work via the train and it is holding up well.The zippers in the back that connect the wheeled portion to the backpack portion are sometimes a bit difficult to work with and don't easily tuck out of view but they work.My only complaint is that within 3 days of using the bag, it shifted slightly. What I mean is, when it first arrived, it sat up straight and tall and the handle when fully extended stretched perpendicular to the ceiling. Now it slants back a bit and doesn't stand up straight anymore but it does not cause the bag to fall over.

Airline Travel: I love that I can walk through the airplane and not bump anyone (it is vertical rather than horizontal) and it fits in the overhead bins very neatly.Removal of the laptop for security checks goes very smoothly and if I don't put too much in the bag, it doesn't get too heavy to lift when necessary.

Internal Pockets: Others don't like the pocket arrangement but for me it is fine. I am able to carry everything I need and it forces me to be more mindful about what I need to take with me (which we should all do anyway). Besides, as noted, if I put too much in it, I can't lift it when I need to.

I haven't been using it very long but if I change my mind on any of this, I will post another review.

Well made.Excellent stitching, quality zippers, great (and silent) wheels and from what I can tell a solid handle.

(More customer reviews)Ok, I bought one from amazon... at the end of themonth of July.Had some trials.Got it going now... but not for the noobs.

The pic that is shown... is just like my M7003 version.I suggest that you go to [...]and familiarize yourself with what is out there.

Finally got this thing going to where it is working great!

First off.... let me give you a brief summary of my travails...

1) Bought the damn thing.Touchscreen was hosed... not very good...and scrolling was next to impossible.Dang...had such high hopes.

2) Got it at home, tried to play with it... alien OS.... not familiar... must learn it.

3) Familiar now. Hooking up a wireless USB dongle for my mouse helped to navigate it better. Google marketplace did not work... understood that from beginning...cool... and there are various fixes out there.

4) Some chinese marketplace was installed... will I use it?Not in your life brother ...ever!

5) Found that you can get Android application files (.APK files) out there on the net...to download... can go ahead and move them to 8 gig memory card that I bought...and install

6) Magic Album is likewelcome screen....shows some quick menu options... and a weather forecast... would be cool if the apps it referenced work.

7) lame apps... I stomped on the "Magic Album" interface... by installing other players.... music, video, etc.

8) Realization... ChiPad builders had no clue... how to set-up Android... not that it could not ever work, they just screwed it all up.

9) With stuff messed up ...cuz the new apps I installed ruined everything...I decided to find a new ROM.Where to find them?[...] of course !!!

10) Thought my device was a M300 by the description.Problem:Eken is the main manufacturer, but.... other chinese companies cloned Eken with slightly different hardware

11) Tried the M300 ROM by Ecotox... a college guy in Australia... he did a great job (remember to donate via paypal to his beer fund LOL) ... just not for my hardware... The menu button did not work...and thescreen resolution was too big.No menu button and no Touchscreen.I did use my USB mouse... and was able to see that stuffed worked MUCH BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL ANDROID LOAD.

12) Realized I did not have a M300... lower screen res meant I had a M100 (600x480).Tried the M100 ROM by Ecotox... Still no menu button and no Touchscreen.I did use my USB mouse again... and saw what could be... if I could just get the menu button and the touchscreen working again.

13) Was my touchscreen broken?Could be.... No I don't think so... think I still don't have the correct Android load for my hardware.

14) A guy name Mogrith on the [...] said I should try the M100 slatedroid version of the ROM.I tried it...still no menu button, still no touchscreen.

15) Found the "fixed" Eken reference ROM...this must work.... Please God... let it work!Nope... it was much closer... and stuff worked much better .... no touchscreen or menu button.

16) Finally, I was looking...and found the M70003 ROM.I did not see this before.This is the only identifiable markings on the darn slate or anything... that number was on the instruction manual.I downloaded that... and bingo... I am back up and running.Guess what?It is a fixed load ... does not have the "bloatware" and crap that the original load had.I would recommend this load for everybody who has the one I bought from Amazon.

17)The touchscreen works...and is much more responsive.Also the menu button works.I was giving it a bad response to people who e-mailed me about it... but now that the new ROM fixes the crap... I would do it ....this is a cheap internet device that you can get some use out of ...if you refresh the ROM.Also, I have the .APK files to install flash and a working Youtube app. ;-)

18)It is not really hard to update the Android ROM.Very easy in fact.

Much better touch screen response, better scrolling.My Internet works well, and now that I know how to set it up.... because I played with it enough... this is going to be a nice little device.Now that I can find my own apps on the web...and use the marketplace... I think it will be useful.Please remember... I have an iPhone...and a 64 GB 3G iPad.It does not replace an iPad...but even the ipad is too big sometimes...and the iPhone is too small sometimes.

I am relieved... that this works.Got some great apps I found.... and the youtube functionality is great...watches them adequately in the 320 resolution.

Also, look at the bottom lip of the device... see how there are 2 speakers... 1 on each side?The sound is very adequate.

(More customer reviews)I just got this bag because my old one broke and it is very nice.Very heavy duty zippers, hardware and stiching.It's a little shinier than I'd like but that will fade soon enough.Also, it doesn't have inside small zipper pockets which are nice for securing small stuff.But it has some other nicer features.The shoulder strap is exceptionally designed with lots of padding, a nonslip surface to keep it on your shouler, and the attachments staggered on separate sides of the bag to keep it close to your body.And the laptop pocket is big and nicely padded whereas my old one was not.The way I treat my bag this will be valuable protection for my laptop.I looked at every one on Amazon and this was by far the nicest for the money, and of course buying directly from Amazon is the best.

(More customer reviews)Or at least in this case they do. :)Overall I think that it's a wonderful product with one of the best (and coolest) features that I've ever seen for a notebook computer...a NANO receiver!!!!Now in this day in age where we throw around all kinds of 'cool' names to make up suckers, I mean consumers, purchase things that we probably don't need, THIS IS AWESOME! Why? I can now place this TINY wireless receiver in the back of my laptop and literally forget about it.I'm able to (almost) throw my laptop in my Swiss Gear backpack and not worry about such things as "Did I remove the receiver?" and others to ensure that you don't snap it off of your laptop.Still worried about loosing the receiver or in some other way damage it?When you're finished on your notebook (or computer) you can actually store the receiver IN the mouse!

As far as the actual mouse, it is a little smaller than I'd prefer, but I'm not using it to game with.It does (as Logitech usually does) include a lot of options to configure the mouse with software wise and features all of the standard mouse options like tilt-wheel and others.The "find" button to me is rather useless so I changed it to act like the middle mouse button (this you can do in the software) BUT if you'd prefer it will perform searches on selected text on your favorite search engine or some other random tasks.Battery life has been great so far, easy on and off functions, I don't have to worry about it turning on in my backpack.Another nice feature is that it also comes with an actually higher quality case to carry it.This mouse is also VERY smooth.For some reason, the way that they designed the bottom enables it to glide along almost any surface much better than any other mouse that I've tried.

Overall, I think it's a wonderful product that is built exceptionally well as well as great styling thrown in the mix.I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants an attractive, smooth mouse that will be PERFECT for traveling!

(More customer reviews)I used to carry a regular laptop bag on my shoulder and a roller bag when I went on business trips. But most of my trips are 1-2 days so I would have a roller bag that was almost empty and a laptop bag to lug around. Good luck finding overhead bin space on overcrowded planes these days. I really wanted a bag that could carry my laptop, accessories and a change of clothes...and was small and light enough for everyday use. I was about to get the Wenger Patriot. That is a really nice quality bag...probably one of the best out there. But there were two reasons why I didn't buy it:

1) The Patriot bag is fat. It won't easily fit under an airline seat.
2) The Patriot bag is heavy. It would be great for trips since it has room for 2-3 days of clothes but not for everyday use.

I was getting really frustrated finding something that fit my requirements. Then I sat next to a guy on the plane that had one of these babies. It is slim enough to fit under your seat. It is just a bit more than half the weight of the Patriot--you can feel the difference when you pick it up. It has a sophisticated and minimalist design. Not too flashy and very professional--I'm not embarrassed to take it into executive briefings.

The TSA Checkthrough feature is awesome. It saves me time on security lines. I put my laptop and power cable in that compartment and it goes right through with no issues.

A couple of concerns. One is that the clothing compartment really only can hold one change of clothes. I don't think you can do a 2 or 3 day trip with this bag alone. Another concern is that there aren't a lot of pockets; just a laptop compartment, an accessories compartment and a clothes compartment. I carry a lot of accessories (portable hard drives, chargers, business cards, etc) so I thought that I couldn't fit them all in. But this design actually turned out to be a positive. I bought two sandwich size boxes (I think it is Rubbermaid) and filled them with all my accessories and put them in the storage compartment next to the clothes section. It fits perfectly and I'm much more organized this way.

Still, it would be nice to have an outside pocket to throw keys, receipts, gum, etc. There is a pocket in the back but it is so tight, I could barely fit my boarding passes in there. For that reason alone, I deducted one star.

In summary, this is the perfect bag if you do a lot of overnight trips and need to carry a laptop. If you do 2-3 night trips and don't mind carrying a bulkier bag, then the Wenger is probably a better choice. I figured that I would use this for overnight trips but I still have my laptop bag and my roller case for longer trips. So this is the bag for me. I would buy it again.

I confirmed the dimensions of the laptop I was ordering with Lenovo and also called McKleinUSA to confirm the size laptop that would fit this case. It seemed like it was a go. Unfortunately, the dimensions of the laptop sleeve and cavity in the case are smaller than advertised and the Lenovo 17" did not fit.
This was an unfortunate waste of everyone's time and effort.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this hoping it would be a good add-on to my Mac mini... not to PLAY Blu-ray discs, but to RIP them to MKV files (using MakeMKV).Fortunately, it works great!

Not only is the setup crazy stupid easy (one Y-cable... two USB into the mini, one mini-USB into the drive), but there's no software to begin using it; the drive is recognized instantly and you can begin reading discs.

Again, this is NOT for watching movies directly from the Blu-ray disc on your Mac -- Blu-ray is still a "bag of hurt" according Jobs, so until Apple builds that into the OS, it'll be a short ride.

But if you want to rip the Blu-Ray to your Mac (and use MakeMKV or AirVideo to watch/convert), it works fabulously.

I don't like to carry a purse along with a briefcase--I want everything in one bag--and this is wide enough to put my laptop/books/papers/whatever in the padded side, and bulky items, including a shoulder wallet and toiletries bag, in the other (organizer) side, with the zippered section between. The zippered section fits letter-sized papers but is not quite wide enough for manila folders. But the outside section fits folders, magazines, legal pads, plus tickets or anything else you might need to put your hands on quickly. There are two end pockets with magnetic clasps. They're big enough for a smart phone (plus there's a pocket inside that will also accommodate a smart phone), but they're not big enough for a water bottle. No problem, you can fit a water bottle inside. I shopped on various sites for this bag and some sites mistakenly say it has a removable laptop section. It does not. I ordered it in red, which turned out to be a very nice deep, vivid cranberry. I took it along on an out-of-town business trip and it performed like a champ. Note that when I was shopping, it was less expensive on the ebags site, but I needed it right away, so I paid extra to get it from Amazon with two-day Prime shipping.

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased an Asus Eee Pc 900A netbook.Mine is white. ( I hear there may be a black one, of this model number, but have yet to see one ).It has the new Atom processor.... of 1.6 GHZ.Also, 1 GB of Ram, and sadly to say...an SSD ( Solid State Drive ) of only 4 GB, and an operating system of GNU or Xandros Linux.

That SSD of 4 GB, was to my way of thinking..... small... but at least large enough to operate with.

This would have been true.... if Asus in it's infinite Un wisdom had chosen not to automatically download all the latest updates to the system at the first opportunity you were to get the baby laptop online !!

But that is exactly what happened... !!Even before I was able to get on the internet with this laptop.... I had less than a couple hundred of MBs to work with....Once online, it automatically downloaded the latest updates and I was reduced to like 70 MB of free space on my hard drive.

Now understand.... it downloaded the software to the laptop.... but did not install it.

So, you could pick and choose which downloads you wanted..... but with only about 70 MB of install space.... you could not install much before you had nothing left on your hard drive !!

I might mention also, that with the downloads on the machine, there didn't seem to be any way of deleting them.

Once you installed a few updates, the computer, of course, almost ceased to operate, as it slowed down to almost nothing !!

I tried to install XP but met with it not installing once it got past the basic text install...( I had XP and SP2 on two separate discs... )

The secret is, you have to have XP and SP2 ( or SP3 ) integrated on the same disk.Once I purchased the XP/SP2 disk..... the install went well.

I must interject here that I purchased a 16 GB, SSD card for about $50 bucks.... and that is what I put the XP on eventually.I also upgraded to 2GB of Ram.

I have no doubt however that you can put XP on the 4 GB SSD card that the system comes with.... I have heard of others doing it.....But you must use the XP disk with SP2 or 3 integrated.

You will of course be left with not too much disk space.... but no worse off than with the Xandros system... and at least not subject to more automatic downloads that take up space on your hard drive.....Also, of course you have the SD card slot, which you can utilize for extra space to store photos etc..

Now, I have the laptop of my dreams !!It is big enough for touch typists to type on, although you do have to be careful.It does take some getting used to, since it is a smaller than normal keyboard....But it beats the heck out of these little cell phone keyboards.

Also, it does Wifi extremely well !!You will find an open wireless internet, someplace along your vacation route....I guarantee it !!

I have found that Iowa and Kansas Interstate rest stops all have free Wireless Internet.A great way to keep in contact with family and friends at home !!

I find it useful to send short emails to family etc.. at different places along my vacation route, to let them know where I am at.... and sometimes send pictures also.... to kind of keep them along on what I am doing and seeing on my vacation trip !!

Although I find Linux, which is installed on this laptop, useful.... and does the job of email and surfing the internet....I would advise people that purchase this version..... i.e. 900A, to buy a larger SSD card and install XP, If you are more familiar with that operating system....

If you are familiar with Linux.... and like it..... then of course this won't be necessary.....

All in all, a great little laptop.I see now that Asus and Acer are concentrating on the 10 inch model, and betting that people will like that model better.It is even getting harder to find a new 9 inch model.Personally I think they are wrong in their thinking on this....I think the 9 inch models were the perfect size... and when you start getting larger, you lose the initial concept of what a netbook is.

Optoma EP-PK-101 PICO Pocket Projector- 4 oz. Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased a few of these for work(to be used with both the iPhone and iTouch). I would probably give this projector 3 1/2 stars, but it was not an option. We have not been using this very long, but those that have used it have been very impressed (it is better than what we were expecting).

Are these for everyone? I would say no. The picture quality is decent, but it does not come close to larger projectors that don't cost a lot more than this does. My guess is that a lot of people will want this because it looks cool, but I'd bet that most people will not use it much once the newness wears off.

The image is decent when viewed in a very dark room. The lighter the room, the more the image gets washed out. It does not take much light either before the image is washed out and only usable if you are fairly close to the surface you are projecting the image on. Even in dark rooms, the image is on the dark side (whites will have a bluish tint). There is a built in speaker, but it's basically worthless so plan on connecting it to some sort of external speaker.

I realize that the review seems a little negative and I don't want you to think that we are not happy with these. Like I mentioned above, we have been very happy with what these can do. The media guys will not be using these to show HD video to clients, but they will get a lot of use. We have a number of people that travel a lot for training purposes. They usually have to pack around a laptop/dvd player, projector, external speakers, and all of the wires needed to connect everything together. They are usually in smaller rooms presenting to small groups. For this purpose, the projector is going to work very well.

Here is what we have put together. Instead of packing around the equipment mentioned above, our managers now have their iPhone or iTouch, the Optoma Pico Projector, and a set of mini speakers from a company called Grandmax (Grandmax.com). The speakers are powered from the iPhone and are not much bigger than the projector (the sound is excellent for the size). They are able to show videos, pictures, and PowerPoint presentations(you need a program to convert the PowerPoint presentation to a video to do this)and not have to pack a ton of equipment to do it.

It will be exciting to see where this technology goes in the future. However, as for now, this projector does a decent job as long as you can live with the shortcomings. It's not perfect and a lot of people will not be happy with the quality, but it has the potential to be a very worthwhile tool if you have a specific need that this projector can satisfy.

There are some negative reviews for this printer stating poor photo print quality or subpar text. But this is due to the user not reading the manual which clearly explains that the supplied cartridges are for general use.If you are going to print photos, then you need to purchase the photo cartridge for superb prints. If you want deep crisp text, then Cartridge #88 does the job.So the negative reviews are not fair to HP or the prospective buyer.
This is a great little printer which can go on the road by either powering it through the car adapter or rechargeable battery (not included with the basic model)
Also, this printer can print from cellphone pics, and other handheld devices such as PDA (via bluetooth technology).The photo's are clear, crisp sharp images
and the text prints are also good. Not a bad investment at all, just buy the proper cartridge for the job and you'll be a happy camper. Not a bad choice at all.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this as a lap top dual screen display hooked to a Telescope taking astronomy pictures.The photo's are viewed here while I do other things with the computer.The low profile fold-up capabilty is unique and perfect for my limited transport and storage needs.The construction is better than I expected and the USB power needs fit my application (AC power is not abundant where I set up telescopes).The picture quality is equivalant to what I get on my lap top and hook up was straight forward on VISTA.The USB cable is not an issue.A dual-port USB came with the monitor but that was too bulky (and long).I replaced it with an old Olympus digital camera single port USB that had the same connector (but much shorter) and it works fine.So far (one month) the UM-71OS has done exactly what I had hoped for.There are no "CON's".The price is well worth the unique features (fold up, USB power, and rotational screen).I would and have recommended it to friends and associates.

This review refers to the HP Pavilion Slimline S3720F Desktop PC (2.5 GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core Desktop E5200 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive,Vista Premium).

The HP Slimline S3720F is an excellent slim form-factor pc with a few limitations. I needed another small sized PC at my engineering lab, so I purchased the S3720F. Typically I build my own machines, so I was quite impressed when I purchased this model, assuming one understands its limitations.

The HP Slimline S3720F runs Intel's Dual Core E5200 processor (mid-range processor line). Note that this is not Intel's "Core 2 Duo" line (the high-range which has a faster front-side bus). Regardless in conjunction with a healthy 4 gb of RAM, there is enough horsepower to run most of my engineering applications, which can be quite intensive. The 500 GB harddrive is adequate, though I see myself needing more storage space in the future (easily remedied with an external HDD).

The S3720F runs Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack1. Contrary to the negative sentiment against Windows Vista, I have to clarify that Windows Vista SP1 is very functional. I use numerous operating systems including, various Linux packages, OS X (Mac), Windows XP, even Windows 7 Beta. So after uninstalling some "bloat-ware" and removing some unneeded startup programs (msconfig), the S3720F runs Vista like a dream. Some slowdown occurs when one uses some Aero features (graphic-intensive features). But aside from that, it is surprisingly smooth. I can load firefox pages in seconds, run Matlab, Itunes, and an array of other programs simultaneously with no noticeable slowdown.

A very important exception to note is that this computer comes with a 64-bit Windows OS. This may cause some incompatibility issues with some 32-bit software. This is arguably of no fault of the OS in its own, but rather that the software was not designed to run on a 64-bit OS. Aside from these issues, once you optimize the system, the performance is much better than one would expect.

The physical design of the system borrows from the concept of minimalism. In the front, there are two USB ports, a covered CD/DVD tray, a HP pocket media drive bay, and the many different memory cards ports. The backside houses the standard ports, with no exceptional features. Note that the video-out to the monitor is VGA and NOT DVI or HDMI. Overall there is some great aesthetic appeal, and one would not be embarrassed to stash this PC in an entertainment center. Be sure to place it in an area that is well ventilated (as with most to all PCs).

Overall, I am very pleased with the overall package for the price. Whether you use it for common office tasks, light engineering work, or a living-room media center (though only one VGA-out is limiting), the HP Slimline performs its tasks admirably.

-I thought I'd post the "Experience Rating" from Windows Vista, which is built-in Vista tool that rates your hardware against some performance metrics. The scale ranges from 1.0 (poor performance) to 5.9 (excellent performance). This tool can be found by right-clicking on "My computer" and scroll to properties. For the HP Slimline S3720F here are the results:

Overall Score of: -- 3.0

The overall score is 3/6 which would suggest an average score. However, the "Overall Score" is based on the lowest subscore, which is the Gaming Graphics. Otherwise, this machine scored exceptionally well in the processor, memory, and harddisk subtests. So in conclusion, unless you plan on using this machine for heavy gaming, or artwork/graphic applications, the S3720F is an exceptional value computer.

At home I use it extensively to surf the net and keep up on email.I no longer carry my larger laptop back and forth to work.I've loaded the little S10 with all of the same software as I use on my primary computer (MS Office Professional, Visio, Project, Adobe, etc.).It's only a little slow to load the applications and works great in a pinch.I'd make it my primary computer, but the screen is too small and scrolling back and forth all day can be tiring. Still, it's very handy for travel or when I don't want to carry my larger laptop. It fits easily in my carry on and add about the same weight as a book.Keep in mind you'll need also carry an external drive if you want to watch DVDs.

Waited long time (about 1 month) to receive this one. It was light, small but big enough screen for web surfing and other light task windows programs.
The battery life lasts about 3 hours with the "super power save" mode that come with the S10 and it is only 3 cell battery. They could have used 6 cell battery for longer operating hours.
Better looking than HP, ACER, MSI and Eee PC

The 8.9" Acer aspire one is the same size but a little thicker than S10 and costs the same even though aspire one have bigger memory, hard drive and 6 cell battery. The 8.9" screen on aspire one makes it thicker edges next the LCD screen when compares with S10, this is the main reason I don't like aspire one.

Pros:
Stylish, light weight, build-in mic and webcam,
no other junk software installed (very clean),
80GB hard drive.
Bright screen, 10.2" not 8.9" or 7". Great Vaule.
Thin screen edge.
Fast boot up.

Cons:
3 cell battery, hard drive is partitioned to 2 sections.

Update:
I put 1x2 GB Crucial PC2-5300 on Ideapad S10, it showed 2GB in Windows XP, not 2.5 GB.
Only 1 slot available in S10 and so maximum memory is 2GB. This means the on board 512 MB is not used by the system.
Also tried putting 1 GB memory and it showd 1.5 GB total in XP.

(More customer reviews)I've always been a fan of ultraportable computers, and I've owned a few, which include a Motion LS800 tablet, Raon Everun, Vaio TX, Vaio TZ, and an Asus 1000H.So, my review is based upon my experience with those machines.The Vaio P, in my opinion, is the ideal combination of portability and functionality, if typing is an integral part of your computing needs.I bought 2 of them (one for me, one for the wife) as soon as they were announced on the Sony website, and have been using it for about 2 weeks.

PRO'S:

(1) SCREEN RESOLUTION: One issue that I have always had with any ultraportable (outside of the Vaio TX and TZ) has been low screen resolution (e.g. 1028 x 680), which has always lead to lots of scrolling and/or zooming-out.The resolution on the Vaio P is, in one word, incredible.EVERY webpage is viewable in its entirety on the screen, as is EVERY document I need to read or edit.The downside is that text ends up being VERY small on the screen, but still legible to me (I type documents in 10-pt Times New Roman font).However, there is a personalization option available that allows you to make text/icons 125% larger than normal, which makes things much easier to see.My wife wears glasses and has trouble reading the text at normal settings, so she uses that mode and it works well for her.

(2) PORTABILITY: Okay, let's not kid ourselves here.This thing will NOT fit in your shirt/pants pocket (unless you're wearing very baggy cargo pants), but it will fit in a purse or any small satchel.Weight is negligible, even with the extended-life battery attached.Portability is a big thing for me in my profession (medical student, MD in a few months), and this machine can easily fit in the pocket of my white coat when I'm on the move.

(3) THE KEYBOARD: I type extensively as part of my profession, and having a usable keyboard is a component that has always been missing from any computer that I could carry on my person.My Motion tablet and Everun were useful for reading on-the-go, but essentially useless for typing anything beyond a short phrase.My Vaio TX/TZ have great keyboards (I've typed thousands of pages on them), but the machines themselves are too large to carry on me at all times.

Let me also take this opportunity to point out that, in comparison to the Asus 1000H, the Vaio P is not just another crappy netbook.The keyboard on the 1000H, for many reasons, is a low-quality component that definitely shows with heavy use.Any typing mistakes made with the Vaio P are genuinely my own keystroke mistakes, which was not the case with the Asus (90% of the time, it was just the junky keyboard causing mistakes).The right-shift key on the Vaio P is truncated, but its placement to the left of the arrow keys makes it a much more natural motion to hit, and something that you can become accustomed to without causing you to alter your typing accuracy on a normal-sized keyboard, which was really just impossible with the 1000H (that had the right shift key placed to the right of the arrow keys).

(4) FUNCTIONALITY: It is a fully-functional PC, capable of running any program you might need to run, given that you're not trying to use this as a gaming PC.I have installed Windows 7 on my Vaio P, which has made it much more efficient at running multiple programs simultaneously, as well as improving stability.I would highly recommend this upgrade for anyone purchasing this machine.

CONS:

(1) VISTA: This machine should have come standard with XP.Vista boot time is horrendously slow, even from hibernation, and installing Windows 7 does not fix this problem.My other ultraportables running XP were able to return from hibernation in about 20-60 seconds.The Vaio P takes probably 2-3 minutes.Maybe I'm a little impatient, but I want my computer to be ON when I turn it on.The integrated instant-on technology is not terribly useful to me because I generally need to use programs other than Media player or Firefox when I fire my machine up.

(2) NOT USER-UPGRADEABLE: As I understand it, the RAM is soldered to the motherboard and thus not upgradeable.3 GB of RAM would have made the VAIO P much faster, and would have alleviated problem (1) I described above, and with 3 GB of RAM, Windows 7 would not even be a necessity because it would then be able to run Vista acceptably.

(3) STANDARD BATTERY LIFE: Sony touts 4 hours of life with the standard battery, which is of course a lie.It's more like 2.5 to 3 hours with screen brightness turned down to 1 or 2 (at which it is still very much readable/viewable), with WiFi on.I also have the large capacity battery, which takes it to 6.5 to 7 hours at the same settings.The large capacity battery adds maybe 1 to 1.5 cm of height to the machine, which is something of an eyesore, but I will make the sacrifice because the added battery life is worth more to me than the 0.2 lbs (not noticeable) and increased size.

(4) LACK OF TOUCHPAD: This omission is well-documented in other reviews; the pointing stick does what it is intended to do and it does it well -- however, it does NOT replace the touchpad or a mouse.Most people are already well-aware of this issue before purchasing the Vaio P.One thing I would liked to have seen instead is the optical mouse like on the Raon Everun, which is an intuitive and exceptional pointing device that is easier to use than the pointing stick.

*CONCLUSION: the Vaio P is an exceptional device of modern engineering that allows its owners to maintain productivity at a level comparable to that of a laptop while away from home, or when lugging a laptop case is impractical -- thus, I must stress that it is intrinsically a COMPANION PC.One should not expect this to REPLACE a primary PC, nor should one anticipate using this as their laptop 100% of the time, 24/7, because it simply would be foolish and needlessly uncomfortable to do so.I would make the analogy of comparing WiFi to a T1 connection -- given the choice and availability, no one would choose WiFi over a T1 connection, but the convenience and mobility of a WiFi connection are advantages that the T1 cannot match.In the same way, the Vaio P offers unmatched portability and convenience, but its purpose is of a different nature than the primary laptop/desktop -- so, as long as you keep that difference in mind, the Vaio P should enhance your productivity and live up to its tag of being a "lifestyle" PC.

Just in case you decide to order a case for this netbook, keep in mind that the dimensions in the Amazon description or Toshiba's website (10.4 x 7.6 x 1.27 inches) are the dimensions of this netbook WITHOUT the 6-cell battery.If you look at the side-view photo in the Amazon description area (the one with the 7.6" measurement right below it), you'll see it's pictured without the battery.I just measured mine and with the 6-cell battery protruding from the back, it's actually 10.4 x 8.4 x 1.27 so many of the cases you find on Amazon made for 10" netbooks may not fit the NB205 with the 6-cell battery.Okay that's it for my update... read on for my original review...

I just received my Toshiba NB205 yesterday and after spending many hours "playing" with it, I can easily say that, hands down, it is the BEST Netbook on the market today!

At the end of next week, I'll be traveling overseas and I wanted a small and lightweight laptop that I would be able to use to watch movies on the plane, transfer vacation photos and videos to, and use the internet for researching stuff from my hotel room.I currently own a 15" Macbook Pro but decided I didn't want to take it with me since it's a bit bigger & heavier and I can't afford to lose it.That's when I began researching these Atom-based Netbooks.

When I started researching, the Toshiba NB205 had not yet been released but there were still many netbook models out there by other manufacturers.I had originally considered the Samsung NC10, Acer Aspire One AOD250, Asus 1000HE, and Lenovo S10 as they all were pretty much equipped with similar configurations (Atom N270/N280 1.6 or 1.66Ghz cpu, 10" screen, 1GB ram, 160GB HD, 6-cell Li-Ion battery, Windows XP Home) and priced in the $350-400 price range.I won't go into too much detail about what I liked or didn't like about the other products but I had pretty much narrowed it down to either the Samsung NC10 or the Acer AOD250.Then I came across a pre-release review from Laptop Magazine on the Toshiba and decided to wait on my netbook.It was definitely worth the wait considering this is the first netbook I've come across that actually had noticeable differentiating features.When you compare all the others, it's kind of hard to choose from one over the other because they're all so similar!

The 4 biggest selling points on this Toshiba NB205 that had me wait for it was the 9-hour battery life, the look & feel of the keyboard, the size of the trackpad & buttons, and the overall aesthetics of it.

The whole point of buying a laptop this small and compact is for its portability factor.When you have to lug a brick-based AC adapter with you in fear the battery in your laptop won't last as long as you need it, it sure interferes with how portable carrying a laptop really is.A 9-hour lithium-ion battery will definitely solve that problem.Most of you are probably wondering how realistic that 9-hour rating really is... Let me just reassure you all, the battery life is GOOD!I brought it to a full charge, then unplugged it from the adapter and watched two movies on it (more on the movie playback capabilities later) and did 4 hours worth of web surfing afterwards -- all off the power from the battery on a single charge!You students out there can now bring it to all your classes and not have to look for a wall outlet!Oh, btw, I had the screen brightness set to 1/2 (level 4 brightness setting) and turned off the Bluetooth.

Netbooks are known for smaller keyboards and even worse, SMALL trackpads and trackpad button(s).In addition to the smaller size, many of the netbooks I saw in person at my local Fry's Electronics had very "cheapy"-feeling keyboards -- they just felt real fragile compared to the keyboard on my Macbook Pro.Enter the Toshiba NB205.Finally, a netbook that has a keyboard with keys that had the look and feel of a Mac keyboard and a robustly solid build to it.In addition to the look and feel, the keys were also pretty darn close in width to my Mac keyboard (both my Macbook Pro's keyboard, and my desktop Mac's keyboard).I'll try to post some comparison photos on Amazon this weekend for all those interested.The trackpad and buttons on the NB205 is also the biggest I've seen in the netbook category.Toshiba did a tremendous job in getting this right.Most of the other netbooks had really small trackpads and little miniature trackpad button(s) that felt real flimsy.Another feature that I like with the trackpad that's not stated anywhere is that the very right edge of the trackpad can be used for scrolling web pages or other documents (similar to the one on the Samsung NC10).This feature is not obvious as there are no arrow indicators like there is on the NC10 but it does support it!

I won't go into the aesthetics of this unit since you can pretty much see how amazing this netbook looks from the Amazon photos (I'll also add my own photos this weekend so you can get a better feel for the size, etc.) but let me now shift focus on using it.

Although I upgraded the memory on the unit to 2GB (I installed the Crucial 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz Memory Module and it works great with the NB205!), all the testing I performed and am about to describe was done with the stock 1GB memory.

The very first thing I wanted to make sure this unit can do is play back, at the very least, DVD-quality movies (i.e. 480P movies (720x480 resolution)).One thing I'd HIGHLY recommend everyone who's interested in watching movies on their netbook do is download the FREE media player called VLC (Google "download vlc").VLC is very lightweight and will play back movies a lot smoother than Quicktime or Windows Media Player; and given the inherently slower speeds of these Intel Atom processors compared to the Intel Core 2 Duo processors, using the VLC media player is your best bet.Using a free program called "Handbrake", one can convert their Bluray or DVD movies to AVC/h.264-encoded movies, which is what I used to convert some of my Bluray collection into a format that can be played-back on my NB205.Since it's out of the scope of this review and would require a tutorial guide of its own, I won't be able to explain how you would go about converting your Bluray or DVD movies.Anyhow, I first converted my Bluray edition of Valkyrie to a 720x480 resolution with a conservative 864kbs bitrate.The NB205 had NO PROBLEMS playing it back...It played back with very smooth video and the audio was synced up perfectly throughout the entire movie.So I decided to convert the movie again.... this time, using more aggressive settings...I converted it to a resolution of 1024x600 (since this is the native resolution of the NB205's screen) and a 2048kbps bitrate.Again, the NB205 was able to play the movie without a hitch.I didn't bother trying to convert the movie to 720P since the native resolution of the screen is only 1024x600 (it would be equivilent to 600P but 600P is not a standard).If you're planning to watch movies on the NB205 with someone else, you'll be happy to know that watching it from a 45 degree angle is very acceptible.Beyond the 45 degree angle, you won't be able to really see much so don't expect to have more than 3 people watching from it (why would you have more than 2 or 3 people watching off a 10" screen anyways!?).

Given it's capability to playback movies very smoothly, anything else I was going to throw at it would be child's play.Anyhow, I was reading that this laptop does get hot but after playing back two movies on it, it was not unbearable when resting it on my lap.So it doesn't seem like overheating problems will be too much of a concern for this laptop (but only long-term usage can really confirm this).

Another cool feature the NB205 sports that I'm not sure is available on all the other competitor models is a built-in accelerometer.It works the same way as the iPhone accelerometer but it's in the NB205 purely to detect if the laptop is about to take a fall.When it detects motion, it quickly moves the hard drive heads away from the hard drive to prevent any mishaps in case the hard drive is currently reading from or writing to the hard disks.Using a Toshiba software utility that's installed from the factory, you can change the sensitiviy threshold of the accelerometer or turn it off altogether.

There are obviously a lot more features that the NB205 comes with but I'm not going to explain each one simply because they're self-explanatory (such as bluetooth, wifi, etc.) but you can find out more about those features in Amazon's description of this product.

One final note before I conclude my review... Toshiba released two main models of the NB205 on the same day... the NB205-N310/311/312/313 (which is the model I have -- the NB205-N310/BN to be exact) and the NB205-N210.I think if you want to save $50, the NB205-210 would be a good choice as well -- provided you don't need Bluetooth or the Mac-style "chiclet" keyboard.For the extra $50, though, you also get the much sleeker, unique Toshiba-styling of the NB205-N31X series.

So if you're in the market for a very portable laptop, and you're considering a 10"-based netbook, the Toshiba NB205 is packed with features, enclosed around a very aesthetically pleasing body, and is very competitively priced!!!

(More customer reviews)This is one of many laptops in the house. (Currently five laptops and a sixth on life support for the kids.) Both my wife and I have a Dell mini 9. This computer fills the void of portability perfectly.As was mentioned by another reviewer, buy a cheap version and do aftermarket upgrades for the best deal. I upgraded to 2G of RAM and put in a 64GB solid state hard drive. Because of limitations (I believe placed by Windows not Dell the optimal configuration cannot be purchased directly from Dell - unless you buy the Linux version and install your own version of Windows -assuming you have an extra version lying around.)

Depending what you do with your laptop this is a wonderful laptop for the price.The limited SSD (solid state drive) size does present some problems if you are dealing with large files such as images and videos; however to be used for internet access, e-mail, and word processing this is just fine. I wish I had something this compact when I went to college. Keep in mind that too many programs will quickly eat up the space of the smaller hard drives.

The small size also comes with a small screen.This may be obvious, but apparently I have a lot of crap (ahem, useful tool bars) that I place on my word processor program and browser program. This does limit "useful" space on the screen.

I have found the battery life to be in line with most laptops. It handles being carried around in a bag every day well enough.Having owned many Dells, they can be finicky. I usually buy the support plan (Although, I didn't on my mini 9) I have gotten my money's worth on some computers and never used it on others.

This laptop has limitations and would not be my choice as an only/first laptop unless it was a real on the go application or for college use.

(More customer reviews)Simply put, the keyboards IBM puts in its Thinkpad line of notebooks are the best keyboards I've ever used.The keyboard here is just a large-model Thinkpad keyboard done up for the desktop with USB (with a built-in two-port USB hub).As such, it's perfect.I've wanted one of these since I first laid fingertips on a Thinkpad keyboard in 1997.

I'm a 100 word-per-minute touch typist who's seen a lot of keyboards -- I learned to type on a manual typewriter in the early 1970s and spent summers in college earning money as a keypunch operator on teletype-like keyboards.Before this keyboard, I was always on the lookout for a better keyboard.

The throw of the keys on this keyboard is a lot less than that of a standard desktop keyboard.And although the keys feel somewhat "clicky" (good for feedback), they're also relatively quiet (good for neighbors and family).The key layout is just like on the Thinkpad.I use the windows key a lot, but you can rebind one of the ALT keys in your operating system.

The keyboard extends a long way below the keys, just like the bigger Thinkpad's keyboards.I find this provides perfect palm rests for me.

I would've gotten this just for the keyboard.But there's also a trackpoint built in.And my fingers want to use it due to long experience on IBM notebooks. Of all the notebook pointer technologies, this is the only one that works for me.It works better than other company's implementations of track pointers (like on a Toshiba my wife had).Trackpoints don't bounce on planes or trains like the touchpads.Applying "belt and suspenders" caution, IBM also included a touchpad and two sets of mouse buttons (one high and one low); the pair closest to the keyboard are very convenient for dealing with the endless series of dialog boxes in modern applications.

All told, this keyboard helps my typing speed and accuracy.And even though I'm a speedy typist, my typing and mousing is still the bottleneck in most of the work I do on a computer.

(More customer reviews)I was able basically to open the box, plug it in, and start browsing the web.It detected my wireless instantly, no setup worries for me, which was soo much better than my last laptop.

Pros:
-what a price, very powerful and good looking for under $900
-medium size, fits in large purses which is convenient
-outside top of case is sexy silver, makes a good mirror (not quite that reflective, but almost)
-built in webcam, which the face recognition uses
-no annoying lock to keep lid closed, but very tight and secure also
-white LED lights, soothing and less annoying than blue, if a little bright
-sound control (spin wheel) on outside for easy access
-textured touch pad so i know when finger is on it
-64-bit Vista, excellent, easy to use for me so far, and this computer is built so it will run fast
-USB ports on both sides
-came with an interesting radio antenna, which i use occasionally
-power cord is nice and long, very convenient for public places
-keys have a nice feel to them, stiff but sleek
-screen is bright and crisp, haven't found it too reflective for my taste
-overall, sturdy, portable, a real looker

Cons:
-the battery on my laptop doesn't last as long as the manufacturer says, only about 3 hours unplugged on balanced power usage, the power saver mode hasn't made a difference in this so far...5 hours would be nicer
-does not come with microsoft office products, including but not limited to Word and PowerPoint, although many laptops don't come with this software anymore
-not able to decrease the brightness of the screen enough for when I am using it in a dark room, and the buttons to adjust said brightness are very inconveniently placed at the top of the keyboard...they are secondary functions of the F6 and F7 buttons, so that you have to use the FN key which is at the bottom of the keyboard
-I am always accidentally pushing the LED seamless buttons at the top near the power button (they control sound and music), these buttons are attractive but annoying
-speakers are too quiet and i often have to use headphones or secondary speakers, but the sound quality is decent, if quiet
-keys are glossy and adorable, but they show dust and fingerprints all the time, no matter how clean you are...but it looks so good when they are clean it is probably worth it
-MY X KEY POPPED OFF THE SECOND DAY USING THIS LAPTOP...from my experience, Toshiba keyboards are notorious for losing keys, if this happens to you, do yourself a favor and send it back right away and get a replacement
-a really good docking station for this laptop is not yet available as far as I can tell
-thin enough for me, but not ultra-thin or small like other new trendy laptops
-tiny spacebar, big enough but smaller than on a standard keyboard, takes a little getting used to

Samsung 7-Inch UMPC with Touchscreen Review

I purchased a Samsung Q1EX with 2 GB RAM, 1.2 GHz VIA Nano processor, Windows XP, and 32 GB solid-state hard drive (not from Amazon, sorry). The SSHD added about $300 to the price. I needed a small tablet PC running Windows XP to use in my unpressurized airplane to run electronic chart and navigation software. Conventional spinning HDDs aren't very reliable with cabin altitudes over 10,000 ft. so I needed the SSHD. I rarely travel so I don't need a full-size laptop, and when I do travel I want a laptop with a small footprint.

I purchased the Q1EX with a keyboard portfolio, which combines a tablet support, a dock with VGA and LAN ports, and a keyboard in a nice folding protective vinyl case. Other recommended options are a Stowaway Bluetooth mouse (the portfolio keyboard has a touch pad) and a USB port expander (the Q1EX has 2 USB 2.0 ports).

The Q1EX is extremely thin and light. The touchscreen is very bright. There are no buttons on the device (unlike the other Q1s) except the on-off-lock switch and the Dial Menu wheel on the left and the CTRL-ALT-DEL button on the right. I use a 32 GB SDHC card so storage hasn't been an issue. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are built-in. The sound quality and volume are good. It's a nice little package.

I haven't encountered any real cons about the device except it seems very slow to boot up, almost as if it has frozen or crashed. There is a camera on the back but it would've been nice to have a camera facing the user. Built-in GPS would've been nice too. If you want a small tablet you'll compromise on the tiny characters in 1024x600 res, but it is very sharp and bright (barely readable in direct sunlight, like most touchscreens, but it's fine outdoors in shade). Having to carry a keyboard is a slight hassle but programs such as DialKeys might solve that issue. Other reviews I've read say that videos are choppy but I haven't noticed that. The stylus is stored in a little slot on the wrist strap, but I don't use the wrist strap so I need to bring a stylus or just use fingers.

If you want or need small, the Q1EX is great, and you'll accept the trade-offs.

Sony VAIO VGN-SR410J/B 13.3-Inch Laptop - Black Review

(More customer reviews)This is my second laptop, upgrading from a Toshiba Satellite. Sony has done a lot of good and bad things with this one. It is meant both for home and office. A powerful performer with a small size. As with other Sony products, it is a beauty.

PROS:
1. Speed - The laptop I got has an Intel Core2Duo P8600 which is blazing fast and coupled with ATI graphics (128mb graphics card in my laptop) it works perfectly fine. The RAM in this can be upgraded to a DDR3 (it comes with DDR2-800 standard).
2. Screen - LED backlit LCD 1280x800. The screen is awesome and vibrant, excellent colors and extremely bright (I keep the brightness to 4 out of 6 levels normally) and it very good for watching movies.
3. Keyboard - The full-size VAIO-style (or Macbook-style) chiclet keyboard is great to type on. Well-spaced keys with low errors while typing. You know this when you start using it.
4. Touchpad - Ok. This is no Macbook with multi-touch but it has a nice matte textured, large touchpad. It is very responsive and convenient.
5. Switch-Mode - This is a new feature Sony has brought up. It allows up to 3 custom settings for 5 buttons. For instance, you can have a setting for home use and specify 5 applications which can be easily accessed by 5 buttons located just above the keyboard. You can also set different wallpapers for each setting. Quite a handy feature.
6. Integrated webcam and microphone - These are pretty standard on laptops these days but the picture quality and sound quality from microphone is good.
7. Styling - The new Vaio design (tube-styling or whatever they call it) is amazing and it looks pretty good. Overall the laptop looks sexy.
8. Construction - The laptop is quite sturdy and has a solid feel to it.
9. Cooling - This machine has ample cooling vents and at the right places. I can hardly hear the fan even when I am playing games on this (yes, I do play games and they run smoothly). The bottom hardly heats up and you can keep working with this on your lap for prolonged hours.
10. Wifi and bluetooth - Well, these come standard with wifi-n and bluetooth. I find Sony's SmartWi application quite handy (don't know why people complain about this). I can turn on/off bluetooth right from window's sidebar easily and its easy to setup.
11. Battery Life - Well, don't know if its really high but it gives about 3-3.5 hours battery life with normal use, wifi on, bluetooth off and LCD brightness at 3.

CONS:
1. Sony bloatware - Well, a common problem with all the Vaio laptops/desktops - Sony's pre-loaded softwares. I find some of them handy while some of them are junk and are just taking up space.
2. Speakers - The sound from the speakers is acceptable but not loud. Come on, this is just a 13" laptop...you're not going to make it into a boombox.
3. USB ports - It has just 2 USB ports, could have had at least 3.
4. No HDMI out - Well, I think the new systems have a better graphics card and HDMI out. My machine is a SR190 model and one of the earliest. The subsequent SR290 and SR390 (and similar numbered models) have better graphics and HDMI out, but 2 USB ports still.
5. LAN port and modem-port cover - I don't know what Sony was thinking when they came out with this cheap idea of putting a flimsy, plastic cover on these ports. It would have been better if they were open. The plastic cover hangs out once in a while with the slightest of touch. Quite annoying.

P.S.: I am running Windows 7 RC dual-booted with Vista on this laptop and it works absolutely fine. The 'Switch Mode' buttons do not work as Sony has not yet made a driver for Win7. Believe me, Vista runs fine on this.

***UPDATE 02/05/2010***: I am now running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on this sweet machine. It works flawlessly, Sony even has drivers for Windows 7 for all of the SR models on its support website.

First off, let me say that I would have preferred to order this item from Amazon.com, but it was unavailable at the time of my purchase. Amazon is by far my first choice for all my purchases due to their incredible customer service and low prices, and I wish that the N110 would have been available here sooner. That said, here is the skinny on the N110.

So far it has met all my needs and expectations for such a small computer. I have seen a lot of people give bad reviews to netbooks based on their lack of an optical drive, small keyboards/track pads, or their poor performance with 3D gaming.To these people I say - do some research and know what you are buying before you purchase it.It's a netbook people, not a 15" laptop that has been magically shrunk to fit in a 10" casing.Like all things in life, some things had to be sacrificed in order to achieve such a small computer.Processing power and track pad/keyboard size had to be decreased to fit everything into such a small package and get extended battery run times.

Before purchasing the N110 I had about a weeks experience with the Samsung NC10 Special Edition. I returned it to Amazon.com due to some squeaks and creaks coming from the casing on the left hand side.I know that some netbooks have flimsy construction and that this can be attributed to their low costs, but from the reviews I have read on the Samsungs, this should not be the case.Since the build quality's reputation on the Samsung is impeccable, I determined that I must have a defective unit and sent it back to Amazon.Amazon.com took it back with no questions asked for a full refund.Thanks Amazon!!

Since the N110 was starting to show up on online retailer's sites, I decided to hold off on ordering another NC10 SE and get the N110 instead.

Boy, am I glad that I did. The chassis on the N110 is beautiful (with zero squeaks or creaks).I definitely find the red stripe on the N110 easier on the eyes then the chrome one found on the NC10 SE.Also, the round edges on the N110's chassis give it a much more modern look then the NC10's square chassis.Here is my breakdown from a previous review of the NC10 vs NC10 SE vs N110.I am reposting this because I am sure that a lot of people who are interested in the N110 will also be looking at the NC10 and NC10 SE.Hopefully this helps some of you to come to your decision.NC10 vs. NC10 Special Edition:
1. Larger battery on NC10 SE: Both are 6 cells. 5200 mAh for standard NC10 vs 5900 mAh for Special Edition.
2. Larger track pad on NC10 SE. (see pic here: http://www.liliputing.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/nc10-touchpads.jpg)

Essentially the Special Edition has the same specs as the new Samsung N110, just with the NC10's chassis. Further details on the differences below.NC10 Special Edition vs.N110
1. N110 has glossy screen, and NC10 SE is matte. At first I thought I would not like a glossy screen, but after using my new MacBook Pro 15" for the past few months, my mind has been swayed.
2. Ingratiated graphics: N110 has Intel 945 GSE w/ 128 MB VRAM vs NC10 having Intel 945 GSE w/ 64 MB VRAM.No sure how this will impact video playback, buy my philosophy is more is always better.
3. Different chassis. Edges are rounder on the N110, along with the strip of red around the edges. One of my TVs is a Samsung w/TOC, and I like it just fine.

Is it worth it? It depends. Since one of the biggest complaints I've read regarding the standard NC10 is its track pad size (a hardware element that cannot be modified), The extra costs for the N110 is a small price to pay to have a little more real estate on the track pad and more battery power (an extra bonus). If you use an external mouse, the track pad size is moot and does not matter, so the N110 may not be worth the extra money.As far as purchasing the NC10 SE over the N110, if you like the square chassis and matte screen, I would say go for the NC10 SE.At the time of this review, the NC10 SE was currently unavailable and has this message up from Amazon:

"Item Under Review

(More customer reviews)I didn't expect to buy this.First, I *hate* white electronics (they usually look cheap and like they should carry the Fisher Price logo).Second, I know people who have had serious issues with HP laptop motherboards.However, last week Staples had it for about two hundred bucks less than its MSRP which was about two hundred less than I expected to pay for these specs.I couldn't resist.

I'm happy with the design.First, the white is not so bad.It has a shiny "pearl" like surface, a subtle graphic design on the cover/wrist rests and black and silver trim.This all makes it look more grown up and stylish than other white laptops.Second, compared to other laptops with these specs it's not too big or heavy.It's in-between a netbook and most full sized laptops.Also, the weight can be reduced by half a pound by swapping out the DVD drive for a dummy piece which is included.

I'm overall happy with the performance and quality.Seems fast and smooth for the most part, and I'm not currently having any problems with it.But I had a couple of initial problems. First, I had to take the first one I got back due to a stuck pixel that I couldn't unstick with any software programs. I didn't want to risk voiding the warranty with any physical methods.The second one I got was stuck-pixel-free.However, I was having serious issues playing internet video.That was a big deal to me.I tried a live chat rep - I think he was illiterate - he kept asking for info I had already provided, completely misconstrued my problem and even when I explained it for the 3rd time, he offered completely inappropriate solutions (e.g. program specific solutions, when I had told him it was in all programs).Somewhat dubious, I finally called tech support.I got a guy who was GREAT.Granted it took us over an hour of troubleshooting, but he finally figured it out.The issue was the wi-fi card driver.It just needed to be updated with the newest, which was posted on HP's site. So, I highly recommend checking HP's site for the latest driver updates, especially if you're having this issue.

And I agree with the other reviewer about the battery - 2 to 3 hours is what you can reasonably expect, but it depends on what you are doing. And yes, it is very quiet. Also, I should note that I did not get the rectangular remote shown on the bottom of this page with mine.I only got the small card one shown in the pictures up top.So, I don't think that other remote comes with it. (EDIT: Since I posted this review, Amazon has replaced the picture of the remote, it now shows a correct remote).

Just in case, I picked up Squaretrade's 3rd party extended warranty.It was a great price compared to Staples' and HP's plans.And it will protect me if this ends up being a lemon or if my dog flies into the cord and knocks it off the coffee table.

***UPDATE*** Good thing I got that Squaretrade warranty.I was carrying it from one room to the other with the cord and the cord's loop caught on a doorknob forcing everything out of my hand when I took my next step, and that was the end of my DV4-1540US.Hard drive survived, but screen didn't and Squaretrade reimbursed instead of fixing.I had planned on just buying the exact same thing, but learned it's been discontinued.The DV4-2170US seems to be its successor, basically being the same except with an upgraded processor (i5).
